It's a new day at Crane, Poole and Schmidt: Edwin Poole has a breakdown and shows up to a staff meeting sans trousers, Alan is defending a black girl's bid to play Little Orphan Annie, and Denny is caught cheating with a client's wife.
Alan helps an ex-girlfriend, who once tried to run him over with a car, get released from a mental hospital. Denny takes a medical malpractice deposition and ends up defending himself from misconduct charges.
Denny is asked to assist on an environmental case where the opposing counsel is his son. Alan leads on a sexual harassment case where his opposing counsel is Christine, his ex girlfriend who tried to kill him. And Sally is defending a man who says he didn't steal a woman's wallet.
Edwin Poole escapes from the psychiatric hospital and takes a case where his defendant admitted to killing a police officer. Alan is asked by Paul Lewiston to do whatever is necessary to get a powerful client out of a shoplifting charge.
While Paul, Brad, and Denny scramble to cover a class-action case of Edwin's, Alan sues a doctor for malpractice on behalf of a hypochondriac and Lori takes another murder case to try and reengage with people.
Alan defies Paul and defends an old friend's husband from slanderous political advertisements; he later assists her in leaving her husband when she finds out he is cheating on her. Denny sees a doctor about his memory problems and Lori helps an old friend in the D.A.'s office with an unusual custody case.
Lori helps an old client who was shot while attempting a convenience store robbery. Alan defends an old client from a punitive judge. Denny, overcome by the Red Sox winning a World Series, is arrested for solicitation of a one-legged woman.
Alan helps a man who cross-dresses fight his employer for wrongful dismissal. Lori helps her therapist deal with a case of the greater good vs patient privilege.
Tara tricks opposing counsel in an age discrimination case to give up privileged information. Alan and Denny are on opposite sides when they discover their client has been secretly testing a potentially fatal drug on unsuspecting patients.
Lori and Brad defend a woman accused of murdering her husband and his lover. Alan is held at gunpoint by a man he had arrested after the man tried to kidnap his children to Peru.
Shirley Schmidt returns to Boston to clean up the litigation department, much to Denny's dislike. Lori and Paul sue the US Government for failure to rescue the people of Sudan. Alan defends Bernard Ferrion, a man who killed his mother with a skillet.
Shirley and Lori defend a school board sued for requiring teachers to teach intelligent design along side evolution. Bernard Ferrion kills again with his skillet, however Alan refuses to represent him and has Tara defend him instead.
Brad and Tara defend a woman whose ex-business partner claims she lied about her sexual orientation. Denny takes a solo case defending a doctor who prescribed medication to a patient that was not yet cleared by the FDA.
After representing a restaurant owner against a town trying to ban red meat, Denny decides he has Mad Cow Disease. Alan is arrested for starting a bar brawl while on a date with Tara.
Shirley and Alan defend a police officer accused of torturing a man to get information about a kinapping suspect. Chelina and Denny represent a woman suing her ex-fiance for leaving her at the alter. Catherine befriends Bernard Ferrion and tries to help him find God.
Alan and Chelina help a teenager sue his high school for blocking the "fair and balanced" channel on school televisions. Denny and Shirley take a case for an old friend who wants to be frozen.
Alan travels to Texas to help Chelina with an old client facing the death penalty. Shirley and Denny defend a female client against multiple charges of hiring a prostitute. In the course of the case, Shirley suspects Denny of bribing the judge and she and Paul decide to take steps to remove Denny from the firm.
New associates have joined the firm as Alan, Denny and Brad defend a woman nicknamed The Black Widow from charges she murdered her seventy year old husband. Denise defends a company against charges of religious intolerance.
The Kelly Nolan trial starts and Catherine is more and more concerned about Bernard as they watch the trial together. Tara and her ex-boyfriend represent a singer banned from performing the song War as it is deemed un-American. Denise involves two new junior associates in her divorce proceeding.
Denny takes Alan to Nimmo Bay for a vacation, and while fishing the boys get involved with a Canadian case dealing with Pacific salmon. Catherine admits to Shirley she killed Bernard and the firm has to decide how to handle the case. Garrett and Sarah settle Denise's divorce, but there will be consequences.
Catherine's murder trail begins. Denny, Shirley and Denise defend a US congressman of fraud charges when he is accused of taking campaign monies with no intention of supporting an assault weapons ban. Reverend Diddum has his revenge on Garrett and Sarah.
Lori files a sexual harassment charge against Denny. Denise and Sarah represent a man whose wife died in a house fire caused by a pick-up truck catching fire in their garage. Shirley fires Catherine.
Shirley and Denise help two sets of parents, one Christian, one Wiccan, sue their school for it's Hallowe'en pageant. Alan represents Cassie Elliot as she sues the US Army for her brother's death.
Denny is ordered by Judge Cooper to represent an indigent client accused of murder and rape of a child. Denise represents an old friend of Shirley's who is trying to save his marriage from annulment after he cheats on his wife ... with a cow. Alan and Brad defend a TV station that fired it's popular clown for discussing global warming on the air.
While Alan deals with a bout of night terrors, Denny. Shirley and Paul defend a young man accused of vehicular homicide. Denise works to settle a case involving a plastic surgeon who injects his own ... fat ... into women's lips.
A day shopping ends in disaster for Denise and her housekeeper when the housekeeper's son is kidnapped. Alan takes a client suing for damages after being shot in the face with a paintball gun ... by Denny.
Brad is charged for his conduct during the case to save Tito Perez, Denny and Shirley take on his defense. Alan assists Melissa with her credit card problems with some help from Jerry "Hands" Espenson.
The partners are voting for new partnership invitations and both Brad and Jerry are up in the vote. Denise and Paul represent Daniel Post, a wealthy man with cancer who bought himself into a drug study, who is being sued by one of the other study participants.
Daniel Post convinces Denise to let him help with a case of helicopter parents harassing a teacher. Alan defends Jerry from Shirley's rather over zealous charges from the incident the previous week. Shirley, Paul and Brad realize they have to protect Denny and the firm from Beverly.
Alan is having a busy week. Dense wants Alan to convince a client a friendly gift from a health care company is a good deal, instead Alan sides with the client and takes the case to court. He also has to deal with Catherine Piper starting a one-woman crime wave. Meanwhile, Shirley, Paul and Brad see the Beverly situation quickly becoming untenable.
Alan defends Irma from charges of lewd behavior when she leads a women's protest of redistricting by having the women topless. Denise attends Daniel's "funeral" and realizes the relationship is taking a toll on her. Garrett and Catherine are at odds for office space.
Alan represents a girl denied entry to a private school because she cannot smile. Denny convinces Brad to help Beverly with an arbitration situation. Shirley and Denise represent a young woman denied emergency contraception after a rape.
Alan and Denny defend a man against manslaughter charges for the induced death of his wife. Shirley has to deal with an ex-husband who says he still loves Shirley, even though he is about to marry another woman. Paul takes steps to reconcile with his estranged daughter.
Denny and Beverly get married. Three hours later, Denny is caught cheating and Shirley, Paul, and Brad scramble to cover Denny and the firm from Beverly's lawyers. Alan represents a friend who was fired from her job becuase she couldn't stop smoking.
Shirley's past comes back to haunt her when a widow of a recently deceased photographer threatens to sell a portfolio of photos of a young, nude Shirley. Paul realizes Rachel is still using drugs and he confronts her. Denny defends a man up on charges after he electrcutes a would-be home invader.
Alan defends Melissa after she is arrested for not paying her taxes. Denise is pulled over by a nice police officer and later finds out he needs her help ... he's been arrested for impersonating a police officer. Paul plans an intervention to get Rachel back into drug rehab.
Shirley assists a long-time client with his divorce, only to discover opposing counsel is Ivan Tiggs. Alan helps a friend of Catherine's deal with a corrupt conservator. Denny learns just how important Paul is to the smooth running of the firm.
Alan is concerned when he starts speaking gibberish in court; Denny decides he needs to de-stress and takes Alan to his spa. Denise defends a man of polygamy charges while Brad and Paul help a video game company against charges it makes its games purposefully addictive.
Shirley finds out Ivan lied about leaves Missy. When Missy comes to her with concerns Ivan is not faithful to her, Shirley writes up a post-nuptial agreement to stop him from cheating. Alan second chairs a murder case with Jerry that goes badly.
Alan and Chelina defend a man who was arrested in a white neighborhood, claiming racial profiling. Alan also needs to defend Denny after Denny shoots his therapist. Brad tries to figure out why he is such a bad kisser.
Edwin Poole is released from the mental hospital and Shirley must step in when he decides to sue a snack cake company for causing diabetes. The Mkeba case comes back to haunt Alan when Mr. Mkeba is caught and Alan is arrested for telling him to flee. Brad and Denise deal with what happens next after the kissing lesson escalates.
